Manage Virtual Memory

Did you know you could speed up your computer’s performance and eliminate a lot of unnecessary hard drive access?

Windows 95 uses a temporary swap file that will increase and decrease in size each time you do something. You can solve this annoyance by specifying a fixed size for the swap file.

  1. Determine how much disk space to allot to the swap file by multiplying the amount of RAM installed on your computer by 2.5. For example 8MB x 2.5 = 20MB, 64MB x 2.5 = 160MB.
  2. Click Start-Settings-Control Panel-System-Performance-Virtual Memory and select "Let Me Specify My Own Virtual Memory Settings". Fill in the appropriate information and let the system Restart.
  3. Be cautious of the amount of free hard drive space when changing to a fixed swap file size.
